How to Care for Your Well Water Year-Round

Keeping your well in the best condition possible is essential for having access to quality water for your home or business. When the seasons change, it’s crucial to perform maintenance to avoid the effects of winter weather from snow or a lack of humidity. Fortunately, taking care of your well will mean it will last for years to come.

If you’re looking for tips to care for your well, then read on.

How to maintain my well year-round: Spring tasks

This starts with doing a visual inspection in the spring to check for any damage caused during the winter. This includes items like:

  • Exposed wires
  • Pipe fissures
  • Cracks in the well’s casing
  • A tilted well cap

Some things you should do in the spring to care for your well include:

  • Test for bacteria and nitrates: New microbes may have grown during the winter, especially if the well was not in regular use. It’s a good idea to test during the wetter months of spring before the weather becomes very hot.
  • Inspect and change filters: Water treatment filters need to be working properly for the well to operate at an optimal level. Check the manual to see how often these filters need to be replaced. If they’ve reached the end of their lifetime, then it’s time to switch them out.
  • Gardening: Never use pesticides, fertilizer or herbicides within 100 feet of the well. Closer to the well, make sure you only plant greenery with short roots. Also don’t use mulch or plant anything that will attract pests nearby to the well.
  • Flush and fill the system: If the system was drained and not used during the winter, then turn on the breaker and run each faucet in your home. Allow the water to run for at least five minutes, which should flush the plumbing. Then check for any leaks.
  • Prevent pooling: You don’t want water to collect around the well if it rains heavily. Flooding can be a problem if this happens.
  • Call a well maintenance expert: Bringing in a licensed technician in the spring is a smart idea. They will be able to test the system and ensure it was shut off properly during the winter.

Long-term maintenance

Keeping your well safe requires maintenance year-round. Beyond the items listed above, every year you should:

  • Check valves
  • Test electrical conductance
  • Perform a flow test
  • Do a visual inspection for damage

Once every three to five years, you should:

  • Test for contaminants that are linked to nearby land uses, like pesticides from agriculture or gas drilling
  • Pump septic systems
  • Test for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as well as pH, lead and nitrates
