Tips for Dechlorinating Well Water

There’s always going to be at least a little chlorine in your drinking water. In tap water, chlorine helps to kill off bacteria, viruses and other organisms that would otherwise inhabit the water. In small amounts, there are no concerns about the safety of chlorine. However, there are some cases in which it can affect the taste of your water, and investing in water purification systems in Monroe, NC can help combat this problem.

People who have water wells on their property generally need to shock their well every so often to remove bacteria. But how do you remove that excess chlorine from the water? Here’s some information:

  • Boil it: One easy and cost-effective way to remove chlorine from water is to boil the water. Bring the water to a boil with a lid slightly askew to let off steam, and boil the water for approximately 20 minutes, allowing the chlorine to fully evaporate. Obviously, this isn’t something that works as a permanent solution in most cases, as it would be a pain to have to boil water every time you want to drink it, but it is a simple and effective solution that can be handy from time to time as necessary.
  • Sunlight: You can also let the water sit out in the sunlight for a while, and nature will handle the dechlorinating. It’s not as fast as boiling, but it will work. Simply set the water in a large pot, cover it with plastic wrap and place it in direct sunlight.
  • Use carbon filters: Activated carbon water filters are readily available, easy to use and pretty effective at filtering chlorine out of water. You can either install a filter attachment to your tap, or purchase a water filter pitcher. This won’t cost you all that much money, but you will need to keep purchasing new filters so the water remains fresh. There are also granular activated carbon filters, which work similarly to the aforementioned filters, except that they get permanently installed in your home. They’re a bit more expensive, and you’ll probably need a plumber to install them, but they are a permanent solution.
  • Reverse osmosis: Reverse osmosis water purification systems in Monroe, NC use carbon filters to remove most of the chlorine, and filter all the tap water in your home.
  • Well dechlorination: Sometimes it does become necessary to shock your well with chlorine to kill off excess bacteria or to stave off foul odors. This can kind of kill one of the main benefits of having a well, though, which is avoiding some of the chemical-laden nature of water you’d find in municipal systems. To dechlorinate a well, you should wait at least 24 hours after you shocked it, then let your garden hose run for a couple hours in an area with low traffic. Once you’ve let the water sit and run for a while, you can test the chlorine levels. Repeat this if the levels are still high.
